Nelson Bubble Lamps by Herman Miller
George Nelson found inspiration in a picture in the New York Times showing Liberty ships being mothballed with their decks covered in netting and sprayed with a self-webbing plastic. The image gave him an idea for creating a more practical version of the Swedish hanging lamps he admired. Seeing how the plastic coating could form a smooth covering over the netting, Nelson began exploring how a similar process could be used to create his own lamps.
