The Art of Light: George Nelson’s Bubble Lamps

Nelson located the manufacturer of the resinous plastic and saw an opportunity to use the material to recreate the delicate look of the Swedish lamps. He designed the first prototype in just two days. In 1947, Nelson created the first Bubble Lamp, with the designs later refined and put into production in 1952.

For the construction, Nelson created a spherical steel frame made from perforated rings threaded with steel wires. This simple structure retained its shape under tension, required minimal tools, and eliminated the need for costly welding. The frame was then sprayed with the resinous lacquer, which formed a fibrous web over its surface, followed by a final coat of plastic that created a smooth, translucent skin. The result was a lightweight yet sturdy steel frame with a soft, floating appearance.

In 2016, Herman Miller took over the production rights, continuing its legacy while updating the materials.
